| In 1994 prestigious magazines such as Time and Newsweek featured cover stories about the declining effectiveness of modern antibiotics. They noted the emergence of untreatable viruses like ebola and AIDS, and the return of resistant strains of tuberculosis and cholera as proof that our prescription antibiotics may not be getting the job done as effectively as they had in the past. This has left many wondering what they can do to fight infections if antibiotics prove ineffective. One possible solution is the use of colloidal silver. In the early part of this century, colloidal silver was used extensively in treatment of conditions caused by pathogenic microbes. But what is colloidal silver? Most people are familiar with silver as being a precious metal and routinely use silver utensils and wear silver jewelry. People have long known that silver could be used as a purifying and preserving agent. Ancient Greeks stored water in silver pitchers and early American pioneers would place silver dollars in bottles of milk to prevent spoilage. Even laboratory workers placed dimes in petri dishes to sterilize them. The next question is, what does colloidal mean? A colloid is a substance made of extremely small particles (0. 005 to 0. 0 15 microns in diameter), just larger than molecules, suspended in an appropriate gas, solid or liquid. In colloidal silver, silver ions are suspended in distilled and/or deionized water. So how does colloidal silver work? Silver is a catalyst that stops microbes from utilizing enzymes that allow them to metabolize oxygen, literally suffocating the little invaders. This action has made colloidal silver an effective ally in the fight against over 650 disease causing organisms. These organisms include: bacteria (typhoid, dyptheria, certain types of food poisoning pneumonia); viruses (common cold, influenza, measles, AIDS); protozoa (malaria, giardiasis, dysentery); fungi (ringworm, thrush, Candida albacans, athlete's foot); rickettsiae (rocky mountain spotted fever and Q fever); and chlamydiae (infections of the eye, the genitals, and the respiratory system). Colloidal silver is also an agent that aids in the regrowth of injured tissues. It has been useful in cases of severe burns and broken bones. Elderly . people have noted positive effects on healing. There is also promising research in progress that colloidal silver may be used to help cancer patients. Colloidal silver is considered to be extremely nontoxic and safe for human consumption. It may not be recommended along with intravenous EDTA chelation because EDTA absorbs metals from the blood, making colloidal silver useless. The only side effect of using colloidal silver is that is a condition known as agyria, a grey discoloration of heavy folds of skin, such as knuckles. Agyria is harmless but not very attractive. This condition has occurred in instances of with prolonged used of over-concentrated colloidal silver solutions. Many "colloidal" silver products on the market are not true colloids. To safeguard against inferior products consumers should look to see if particles have settled out of solution and should also make certain that the liquid is nearly clear in color. Particles that have settled out or dark brown solutions may indicate that the particles used are too large. Colloidal silver can be used internally or externally. For adults, the suggested usage is one teaspoon per day on an empty stomach for general maintenance of health or two to three teaspoons in advanced cases. For children, the dosage is between 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon daily on an empty stomach. Externally it may be used undiluted topically, vaginally, as well as dropped into the eye or inhaled.
